“Hinata!” Naruto knocked on the Huuga mansion back door. Someone opened the door and looked at Naruto up and down, assessing. He seemed pleased. “Neji!” Naruto smiled and lifted his hand for a high-five. Neji followed through. “You’re looking snazzy! Where’s Hinata? It’s time to go to the New Year’s Festival!”
“She’s coming down the stairs.” Neji told him. “Take this, I don’t want you to be an embarrassment” Neji pressed a bag full of money to Naruto.
“I have my own money.” Naruto tried to reject it, but Neji pushed it in Naruto’s pocket right when Hinata appeared in the doorway. Naruto didn’t give the money back.
“N-Naruto!” She exclaimed nervously. Naruto’s eyes widened with awe.
“Hinata! You look….” Naruto tried to find the right word, “Beautiful!” He ended lamely. Hinata’s face turned red, but Neji frowned.
“I think you mean ‘gorgeous beyond belief’” He corrected Naruto.
“Right.” Naruto smiled to himself, trying to remember the line. Neji sighed. “Well lets get going!” Naruto grabbed Hinata’s hand and she tripped on her loose clogs. She was about to fall when Naruto caught her. He swung her in his arms so he was holding her face up. Hinata took a sharp intake of air while Naruto passed a fleeting, devilish smile to Neji. Naruto ran off with Hinata towards the center of Konoha, where the festival was taking place.
“Good luck!” Naruto called over his shoulder. Neji’s whole face flushed a deep red. He felt the small satin box in his pocket for reassurance.

Naruto and Hinata arrived in the village square. There was a mouth-watering sent in the air mixing with other smells of delicious foods. There were also lights everywhere, and booths lining the streets as far as the eyes could see.
“Uh-um…” Hinata stuttered. Naruto looked down at her curiously and Hinata blushed again.
“Ah? O-oh!” Naruto came to his senses when people started to look at them with disapproving eyes or laughter, and put Hinata down. “Heh, sorry about that.” He said apologetically.
“Oi! Naruto, Hinata!” Someone called to them from a ring-toss booth.
“Hey Shikamaru!” Naruto waved to Shikamaru to join them.
“Hi” Hinata said shyly when Shikamaru got near enough.
“Hey.” He smiled. “How’s it goin’? Isn’t this year’s New Year Festival a pain? There’s so much stuff to organize, and a lot of the Chuunin and Jounin have to be on duty. What a drag.”
“Well at least we’re not one of them!” Naruto glanced around. “Hey, Shikamaru…” He lowered his voice, “where’s that scary chick? Isn’t she your date?” Shikamaru blushed a little bit and glanced around, too.
“I’m not sure where she is… you think I keep tabs? She hasn’t showed up yet. I said I’d meet her at the fountain around seven thirty. It’s a pain.” Hinata checked her watch.
“Shikamaru… It’s seven fourty!” Shikamaru swore rather loudly.
“Crap! She’s gonna have my hide!” He didn’t even finish his sentence when he bolted off into the crowd.
He arrived two minutes later at the elaborate water fountain. There were benches with their backs to the fountain circling around it.  Shikamaru paced around the fountain twice before sitting down on a bench, making sure he wasn’t the only one late. He looked down at his shoes
“What a waste of time…” He told his toes. He then realized there was someone standing right in front of him by the shadow they cast.
“So I’m a waste of time, eh?” The person mocked Shikamaru. He scrunched his face up in shame and bit his lip. When he had relaxed his face he stood up and faced her.

Naruto took Hinata’s hand and led her into the square, first customarily taking her to the ramen booth.
“Two clears, please!” Naruto called as he walked into the familiar booth.
“Naruto!” The booth manager looked up from his work. “I was wondering when you’d be around. I knew you’d come, my boy.” The both manager looked at Hinata and then at Naruto, then back again. Something lit up in his eyes and said “You’ve got yourself a lady friend now, eh, Naruto? That a boy! I knew you’d attract the pretty ones.” Hintata flushed and Naruto squeezed her hand and smiled at her.
The booth manager gave both ramen a free egg.
After eating their fill, Naruto and Hinata went around to explore the exiting festival. Hinata shyly piointed to a booth across the way. They went to it, and Naruto found that it held masks to buy. Naruto was thanking Neji with all his heart when he saw the price tag.
“Naruto? Is something wrong?” Hinata questioned him when he saw his expression when he saw the price. “We don’t have to get them… or I could pay.” Naruto looked appalled.
“Of course I’m buying them for you! You will not be paying for anything this evening, Hinata!” Naruto said with shock. But your brother will be. He thought to himself. “Which one do you want?”
Hinata picked out a cat mask for herself and Naruto picked up a fox mask. He gave the booth’s manager the due price and they were on their way.
After quite a bit of wandering and playing at booths, Naruto soon got hungry again. He bought dumplings on sticks and rice balls for the two of them, as well as two sodas.
“Hey!” A booth manager called after them “You, the young man in orange and black!” Naruto and Hinata turned to him in interest. “Yeah! You two! Come here!” Naruto gave Hinata a sideways glance and went to the booth, Hinata right next to him.
“You look like a doughty young man. Eighteen?” The manager asked.
“Seventeen.” Naruto answered.
“Would you like to test your strength, young man?” The manager asked.
“Would I!” Naruto’s eyes enlightened.

Meanwhile, Temari took Shikamaru’s hand, sticking her tongue out at him teasingly. “It’s ok, I forgive you. At least I wasn’t the only one late.”
Shikamaru sighed with relief, and was about to say something when Temari jerked him away from the fountain and into the crowded square with the delightful sights and smells.
They bought dumplings on sticks and two sodas while they walked around. Shikamaru won Temari a stuffed animal panda bear at a ring-the-bottle booth, and she kissed him on the cheek for it.
She then led him over to another booth. This one was a test-your-strength booth. Shikamaru saw Naruto going at it, and he almost hit the bell.
“Naruto, you’re a Jounin! Shouldn’t you be able to hit that bell?” Shikamaru criticized. The booth manager looked over to the approaching Jounin and squirmed with delight for new costumers.
“This is no ordinary test-your-strength booth, my good man. This is specially designed for higher-level shinobi. It’s so they don’t get bored with the regular one here.. and so they don’t show off to much, of course.” He advertised proudly. Temari looked the tall device up and down aproovingly.
“I’ll have a go.” Shikamaru held out the amount due for one try and Naruto passed him the hammer.
“Hit the bell and you get a gigantic teddy bear!” The manager urged on. Shikamaru raised the hammer high over his head and slammed it onto the pad. The metal piece went almost as far as Naruto’s did. Shikamaru was disappointed.
“What a drag!” He said. Naruto laughed at him. “Shaddap! You didn’t do much better!” Temari held out her hand. Shikamaru looked at it questioningly. “You want to try?” He asked.
“Yup.” She said, hand still out. Shikamaru handed the hammer to her doubtfully.
“If Sakura were still here, she would’ve broken the thing with her strength.” Naruto observed.
“Same with the Fifth.” Shikamaru whispered to himself. Temari took the hammer and weighed it in her hands. She then swung it with one hand a little above her hand and down onto the pad, gently, it seemed.
The metal piece zipped up the tube like a bullet and hit the bell with a defining noise. People around the booth looked inside with interest and curiosity.
Temari looked smug. Shikamaru and Naruto stared at her with disbelief.
“Comes with having to change the wind currents everyday.” She said simply.
“Wonderful! Wonderful!” The manager exclaimed as he gave Temari the stuffed bear.
“This is for you.” She held it out for Shikamaru. He looked at her with his mouth open. She laughed at his expression. “It’s not that hard to believe I’m stronger than you. You just outwit me.” She handed the bear to Shikamaru. He took the bear, disbelief still in his eyes.
Temari kissed him on the cheek. “Next booth, Shika-kun?” Shikamaru came to his senses and smiled. On their way out, Shikamaru put his arm around Temari’s waist. Temari gave a quick wink to Hinata.

At this time, Neji arrived at Tenten’s house. He paused and composed himself before knocking on her door. He paused again. Nothing. He knocked a little louder this time. Neji heard a lot of shuffling of feet and a muffled cry of pain as something was clearly knocked over in haste of movement. He waited patiently as he heard more running around.
Finally, Tenten came to the doorway, dressed formally in Chinese clothing, acting like nothing happened inside. Her eyes lit up when she saw Neji, a bouquet of roses behind his back.
“You look magnificently superb, darling.” Neji complimented Tenten. She smiled, embarrassed.
“I could say the same for you.” She replied. She came down the stairs slowly. “Are those roses I see you’ve tried to hide behind your back?”
“You seem to be seeing things, Tenten. I have no such thing.”
“But I’m quite sure I see them right now.”
“Even if I use the Byakugan, there shall be no roses here.”
“Bring your hands out from behind your back, then” Tenten said smartly. Neji did so, and the roses were brought into the full light of the house’s lanterns.
“Why, however did those get there?” Neji faked being surprised. Tenten giggled. “For you.” Neji came close to Tenten and gave her the flowers. Tenten smelt the flowers with deep breaths and looked up at Neji lovingly.
Neji bent down and kissed her, his hand to her cheek. The flowers dropped to her side as she kissed him back. She broke away.
“Need to put these in a vase before they die.” She teased him, and went back into her house. A minute later she emerged. Neji kissed her shortly again, and they made their way to the festival.

“Hey, where’d you get that cool mask? I haven’t seen any other like it here!” A guy asked someone that wore an orange mask with a hole in right eye.
“Tobi made it!” Tobi pointed to himself. He was wearing traditional Japanese cloths, but with baggy black cloth covering all of his skin underneath.
“You should make them for booths at the festivals!” The guy said. Tobi didn’t know what to say to that. He pressed two fingers to his ear and whispered,
“Sempai, what should I say?”
“Just say thank you and walk away you idiot!” a voice sounded from the other end of the microphone.
“Thank you and walk away!” Tobi said as politely as possible to the man, and left.
“I meant walk away after, not tell him that. Imbecile.” Deidara scolded. Tobi looked around him. There were a lot of booths around him with pretty festive lights.
“Mmm… that smells amazing!” Tobi exclaimed. He started to walk over to the booth with food, when he spotted a blond kid with a girl that had light purple eyes. “Sempai… I’ve found him.”
